The ability to adapt to change is a necessity both in the classroom and out in the field. COVID certainly put this to the test. Rapid on going change is inherent to the industry and the burden is on educators to keep pace and adapt.

Teaching and instructing have always been part of my overall career plan. I have worked professionally in the field of media production for over 20 years and have instructed many trainees in photography, videography, lighting, sound, interviewing and postproduction.

Working primarily as a Field Producer in the industry, I’ve also enjoyed guest lecturing and working summer film/video production camps. Instructing my own class at East Stroudsburg University brought me to the next level of teaching and it was an amazing experience. Even the pandemic event, which ultimately ended my time there after the spring semester, required me to adapt to distance learning which was also a rewarding experience. My students learned to use what was available and to not despair over the conditions we were all adjusting to. Start with a solid story and you can make just about anything with just a cellphone, a light and a laptop.

Working solo and with large/small crews, I’ve learned to be effective under a variety of conditions. Strong interpersonal skills have aided my interactions with inexperienced interviewees as well as seasoned professionals. This kind of field knowledge/craftsmanship is what I introduced my students to along with story writing, photography techniques and post-production training. Working as an Adjunct Professor and guest lecturer has proven to be a rewarding experience, disseminating my expertise to students using presentations and practical knowledge.
